Cordierite Freeform, also known as Iolite or Water Sapphire from Madagascar, is an exceptionally rare mineral that can be found in significant quantities. Its deep blue hue, often mistaken for black in low light, adds an elegant touch to any gem collection. Named after French mining engineer and geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier, Cordierite offers a wide range of colors, including grey, blue, blue-violet, greenish, yellowish-brown, and colorless, with a notable light blue appearance in transmitted light.

The most coveted and prized variation is the lustrous blue Iolite, often referred to as the "gem of kings". Iolite, a commonly used gemstone, takes its name from the Greek word for violet. Cordierite is also known as "dichroite," a Greek term that means "two-colored rock," highlighting its extraordinary pleochroism. It has earned the titles "water-sapphire" and "Vikings' Compass" due to its practical ability in determining the direction of the sun on cloudy days, a skill utilized by the Vikings. This Cordierite originates from Ambatofinandrahana, Madagascar, providing a unique glimpse into geological history.
